CONCORD, N.H. - The ACLU of New Hampshire today urged Governor Ayotte to veto HB 148, a bill passed by the state senate yesterday in a 16-8 vote that would permit discrimination against transgender Granite Staters in a variety of public spaces, including bathrooms. The bill, already passed by the New Hampshire House of Representatives, will soon be on Governor Ayotte’s desk.

Courtney Reed, Policy Advocate at the ACLU of New Hampshire, said:

  • “If signed into law, this undeniably and egregiously cruel legislation would take away critical non-discrimination protections for transgender people in New Hampshire and permit discrimination against them in a variety of public spaces, including bathrooms.

“It is clear that bills like this are not motivated by privacy or safety concerns and instead fuel very real privacy and safety concerns by encouraging the unpredictable and dangerous policing of bodies and toilets. Transgender people in our state, who are our family, friends, and neighbors, deserve far better than to continue to weather these unwarranted and deeply harmful legislative attacks

“This discriminatory, detrimental, and regressive bill is an attempt to expel transgender Granite Staters from public life - and we urge Governor Ayotte to veto this legislation.”
