Position Overview

The ACLU of New Hampshire is seeking applicants for the temporary 12-month part-time position of Upper Valley Organizing Fellow. The ACLU-NH’s passionate community of activists is stronger than ever. The mission of the Upper Valley Organizing Fellow is to unlock the full potential of activists, volunteers, community members, and the ACLU-NH as partners in the creation of a Granite State and Upper Valley region that is just and equitable for all. Our mission is only possible through co-building and sustaining a movement at the ground level. Through shifting power, we aim to advance civil rights and liberties issues at any given time.

Our team works on regional based campaigns through an integrated advocacy format that demands a high level of interdependence. The Upper Valley Organizing Fellow reports to the North Country Regional Campaign manager. Together, the Upper Valley Organizing Fellow will help to achieve organizational goals at the local and state levels through grassroots, community-based organizing and various creative organizing strategies and tactics. At the ACLU-NH, there is a strong emphasis on long-term relationship building, community empowerment, and transformation.

Core Accountabilities

Campaign Design and Execution

  • Works closely with cross-departmental colleagues to develop goals, strategies, and plans to improve policies that affect civil liberties in the Upper Valley region.
  • Exerts influence at the local and state levels through relationships with allied organizations, grassroots groups, and elected officials. Able to exert influence in adversarial contexts.

Activist Engagement and Education

  • Engage in a wide array of base building tactics to engage and activate members, volunteers, and civil liberties advocates including canvassing, tabling, phone or text banking, digital organizing, participating in and leading coalitions, participating in stakeholder meetings, hosting community meetings/townhalls, and organizing rallies.
  • Develop and lead grassroots public education efforts on our issues by designing and conducting trainings, hosting and participating in community meetings and public forums, and creating toolkits and other educational materials.
  • Conduct strategic rapid response actions as new issues emerge. Embrace flexibility if a rapid response leads to working outside of normal business hours or reprioritizing other work projects.

Volunteer and Leader Development

  • Respectfully and relentlessly recruit and sustain supportive relationships with volunteers, meeting people wherever they are in their activism to develop their skills, their commitment to justice, and ability to meaningfully engage in our work.
  • Cultivate trust and reciprocity for transformative organizing by elevating volunteers’ strengths, talents, and special skills in alignment with our mission.
  • Cultivate and nurture relationships with people who are impacted by our issues, providing support and development to connect their expertise and experience to advocacy through storytelling, testifying, co- authoring communications and educational materials, co-hosting meetings/calls, and contributing artwork or other talents.

Collaboration for Movement Building

  • Build and sustain relationships with coalition partners and other community stakeholders and groups essential to advancing civil liberties issues. Move at the speed of trust with potential partners and continuously look for how the ACLU-NH can support our partners, especially those working with directly impacted communities.

Strategy

  • Participate in the development of local organizing plans that advance our mission and fulfill our short- and long-term goals. Work collaboratively with organizations with similar goals and jurisdictions.
  • Actively collaborate across the organization in alignment with our integrated advocacy approach.
  • Remain vigilant of where cross-departmental strategies can form.
  • Effectively manage people, teams, and/or projects internally when necessary.

Position and Benefits

The Upper Valley Organizing Fellow will be based in the Upper Valley region but will occasionally work from the Concord office. This position is part-time and includes an hourly wage of $32 at 20 hours a week. Applicants should already be based in the Upper Valley or be in community with the region.

Physical Demands

This position requires the ability to operate a computer or laptop, as well as other personal electronic devices to draft/write, communicate, and perform other functions of the job. The candidate must possess and maintain a current valid driver’s license or be able to access adequate transportation in order to travel throughout the Upper Valley and to Concord as needed. The candidate must reside in the Upper Valley for the entirety of the position.
