We are dedicated to protecting and expanding the freedoms of expression, association, and inquiry; expanding the right to privacy and increasing the control that individuals have over their personal information; and ensuring civil liberties are enhanced rather than compromised by new advances.

Freedom of speech is protected in the First Amendment of the Bill of Rights and is guaranteed to all Americans. Without it, other fundamental rights like the right to vote, would wither and die.

We believe the fundamental constitutional protections of due process and equal protection embodied in our Constitution and Bill of Rights apply to every person, regardless of immigration status.

We have a long history defending the LGBT community. To end discrimination, we seek both to change the law and to convince Americans that sexual orientation and gender identity discrimination is wrong.

We work to secure a world that respects everyone’s right to form intimate relationships and to decide whether and when to have children. With reproductive freedom comes opportunity: opportunity to build a secure, productive, and meaningful life.

We work to reform the criminal justice system and make the promise of fair treatment a reality for all people. Especially in the face of economic crisis, our government should invest in alternatives to incarceration and make prisons options of last – not first – resort.

We believe schools are not constitutional dead zones. How can we expect today’s students to grow up to be tomorrow’s civic leaders if we do not respect these fundamental national values in our schools?

Voting is the cornerstone of democracy. And yet, throughout our history we have excluded indispensable voices from this fundamental right. Today, states continue to make it harder for people to vote.
